What Is Sustainable Development ?

Sustainable Development, which all United Nations Member States approved in 2015, offers a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the world, both now and in the future. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an urgent call to action for all developed and developing nations in a global partnership, are at the center of it. They understand that combating poverty and other forms of deprivation requires policies that enhance health and education, lessen inequality, promote economic growth, combat climate change, and fight to protect our oceans and forests. (United Nations, 2016)¹.

Pillars of Sustainability

  • Economic sustainability indicates a manufacturing system that meets current demand levels without sacrificing future requirements. (United Nations, n.d.)².
  • Social sustainability includes ideas like equity, women's rights, participation, accessibility, cultural identity, and institutional stability. (United Nations, n.d.)².
  • Environmental sustainability is about how the environment sustains human life and continues to be resilient and productive. (United Nations, n.d.)².

An example of sustainable development practice:

Goal two states that the world's leading cause of death is hunger. Our earth has given us various resources, but millions of people are starving due to unequal access and ineffective management. With cutting-edge technologies and appropriate distribution methods, we can support the global population and ensure that no one will again be hungry. The State of Security and Hunger in the Planet 2021 (SOFI 2021) study offers the first worldwide evaluation of chronic food poverty based on empirical data in the same year as the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and its global spread. (United Nations, 2016)¹.
